Background:
UrbanBetter is a pan-African youth-privileged advocacy and learning collaborative generating evidence to design planetary health into cities. We work in partnership with civil society organizations in key cities (UrbanBetter Hubs; starting in Lagos and Accra), as well as academic, public, and private sector partners. We have projects funded (by different funders) from 2023-2025 in several cities including Accra, Kampala, and Lagos with experiments in evidence-informed advocacy and participatory research projects.
We are seeking a talented and motivated Data Engineer to join our team at UrbanBetter. As a Data Engineer, you will play a crucial role in designing, implementing, and maintaining our data infrastructure. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the availability, accessibility, and integrity of our data, enabling evidence-based decision-making and insights generation. The ideal candidate is passionate about leveraging data to drive positive change in urban environments.
To succeed in this data engineering position, you should have strong analytical skills and the ability to combine data from different sources. Data engineer skills include analytics, familiarity with several programming languages, and machine learning methods.

Responsibilities:
- Data Architecture and Modeling:
- Design and implement scalable and efficient data models to support the organization’s goals.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to understand data requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
- Data Integration:
- Develop and maintain ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes for ingesting data from various sources.
- Ensure data quality and consistency across different data sets.
- Database Management:
- Manage and optimize databases to ensure high performance and reliability.
- Implement data security measures and compliance standards.
- Data Analysis and Reporting:
- Conduct exploratory data analysis to uncover trends, patterns, and insights.
- Collaborate with data scientists and analysts to provide clean, well-organized data for analysis.
- Data Visualization:
- Create visually impactful and user-friendly dashboards and reports.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to represent complex data insights in an accessible manner.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including analysts, researchers, and project managers.
- Collaborate with external partners and vendors to integrate and exchange data.
Requirements:
- Previous experience as a data engineer or in a similar role
- Technical expertise in data models and schema design, data mining, and segmentation techniques
- Strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or Scala
- Proficiency in database management systems (e.g., SQL, NoSQL) and data warehousing.
- Experience with ETL tools and processes.
- Great numerical and analytical skills.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
- Degree in Computer Science, IT, or similar field.
- Data engineering certification (e.g IBM Certified Data Engineer) is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in a relevant field.
- Experience with cloud-based data platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Knowledge of big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark).
- Familiarity with data governance and compliance.
- At least 6 months of professional data engineering experience
- Familiarity with data visualization tools.
